Vesak Day Crafts – Paper Lanterns

23 May

So this is a pretty common craft but a wonderful hands-on craft that younger kids can take part in. A string of paper lanterns looking ever so lovely! So this year, my theme for Vesak is the Buddhist Flag Colours, so the paper lanterns, all hanging in a row are the beautiful colours of the Flag – blue, yellow, red, white & orange!

What Junior & I Used:

  • A4 coloured paper – one of each colour
  • Ribbon
  • Glue Stick
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Double Sided Tape

How we got about it:

  1. Lay the paper horizontally and fold into two, crease the fold.
  2. Draw vertical lines leaving roughly 1 and half inches from the top (i.e., not near the fold).20130523_141617
  3. Draw lines using a ruler, each line about a centimeter away so that your little one can cut it out.
  4. Get your little one to cut out the lines.
  5. Once all the lines have been cut, open out the paper again.
  6. Now roll the paper and secure from the top and the bottom so that it comes out in the shape of a lantern.
  7. Use double-sided tape at the top and the bottom of the lantern and stick on a ribbon. Also cut out some ribbon for a handle for the lantern.

Mumsible Tips

  • You can get your little one to draw a pattern on a A4 paper before cutting it out and making the lantern!
  • Add strips of long paper at the bottom to give it a little bit more traditional look!
